of Persons with Disabilities

Theme for 2015:
Inclusion Matters: Access and Empowerment for People of All Abilities

USICD staff, board, and members join the global disability community in celebrating the annual International Day of Persons with Disabilities on December 3rd, 2015.  This year, the theme for IDPD is “Inclusion matters: Access and empowerment for people of all abilities”.  The three sub themes for the 2015 International Day of Persons with Disabilities include, “Making cities inclusive and accessible for all,” “Improving disability data and statistics,” and “Including persons with invisible disabilities in society and development.”
One billion people around the world are people with disabilities.  One thing that people with disabilities share in common, regardless of national boundaries or type of disability, is that they do not enjoy access to society on an equal basis with others.  Sharing the right to participation in public life is essential in creating a more equitable society for everyone.  Meanwhile, promoting empowerment enables new, and richer, opportunities for people with disabilities to set their own priorities and goals and to take the lead in creating social change.
The membership of USICD share a vision with the world disability community for creating a society that recognizes the importance of enabling every global citizen to participate in public life.
Last night, USICD celebrated the internation day with our annual Gala, hosted in partnership with Embassy of Finland in Washington, DC.  Pictured below are our 2015 honorees and other special guests.  USICD opened the evening calling for a moment of silence in solidarity with all victims of violence and our brothers and sisters with disabilities affected by the tragic incident that unfolded just hours before the event in San Bernadino, California.
